Coastal Local Environmental Studies

Orogen has undertaken four Local Environmental Studies in the coastal village of Old Bar. The challenge of these studies was to assess the issues relevant to a rapidly growing coastal community and identify the approaches that Council and future developers should take to address the issues of environmental protection, community building, infrastructure provision and regional connectivity. One of the precincts has resulted in a 1600 lot village expansion Master Plan to support residential, commercial and community outcomes.

Flora and Fauna Survey and Assessment and Koala Offset Options Study

Orogen undertook a Flora and Fauna Survey and Assessment and Koala Offset Options Study of a 5.4 hectare forested site on the Medowie lowlands to support a Development Application for industrial use. The Flora and Fauna Survey and Assessment comprised aerial photo interpretation, baseline and targeted botanical and fauna surveys, mapping and report preparation. Vegetation types recorded during the study included Blackbutt Dry Sclerophyll Forest and Coastal Floodplain Swamp Sclerophyll Forest. An assessment of the impacts on Threatened flora and fauna recorded and predicted to occur on the site was made in accordance with Section 5A of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. A Koala Offset Options Study was prepared concurrently with the Flora and Fauna Survey and Assessment to offset the loss of Koala Habitat on the subject site as a result of the proposed development. A series of Koala habitat enhancement options in the Medowie locality were identified from a desktop review and site ground truthing. Options included revegetation and rehabilitation of cleared and partially disturbed lands to improve habitat connectivity and installation of road underpasses and poles at known Koala black spots. This study enabled the proponent to contribute to the improvement of Koala habitat and connectivity in the locality whilst achieving specific development outcomes.
